October is almost finished with just a week left! The frost finally took out the garden, so all we need to do is clean it up and put it to bed. With a nice frost, the leaves are turning quite colorful and are making up for the past years where we just didn't have that "show" of amazing colors.
There's something about the chill in the air and the holidays approaching that make me want to start planning for next year. I really don't have anyone to craft for, so holiday presents are usually gift cards (at the kids' request). My daughter is not really into handcrafted gifts as she said she's always had them growing up. My son likes some but he is up to his neck in socks and he doesn't use anything else handcrafted. Neither child is married or with children, so that really doesn't leave anyone in the family as most that would love handcrafter items are gone. Hubby likes boot socks, but he's all stocked up as well.
I've been selfish knitting and crocheting for awhile now and I enjoy making things for myself. I've always done things for others - so when this revelation came up, I took some time for me. Although I like making my own clothing, I still miss making items for babies and children. In fact, the kids are what got me into serious knitting. My Mom was the knitter and I just focused on crochet because it was faster. When Mom died, the kids were still really young and I sat one day thinking that they would never see any hand knit clothing if I didn't step up to the plate. The kids loved what I made and kept asking for more. They sure kept me busy between sewing, crocheting and knitting!
I've been missing the small clothing construction, so this coming year, I think I'll be making some sweaters, etc. to donate. It will satisfy 2 needs - one for me making small clothing items, and one for those that can really use them. In a way, I'm still selfish knitting/crocheting.
The plans so far are to finish up my knit and crochet WIPs, get better on my colorwork and stranding, make a Ranunculus sweater (my second try) and knit some little things to donate. Then there is the sewing side. I really want to finish a quilt. I have one started, and with a new craft room, I should be more able to finish it since I don't have to keep toting things back and forth to and from the kitchen table. I can work on things when I have time. I think this is a good start to my list for next year.
